You are not your fear

It’s okay to be scared – but your spirit is stronger than the stories fear tells you.

It’s that deeply uncomfortable and terrifying feeling—as if the ground beneath you has disappeared. Fear can make us feel lost, disconnected, and helpless.

All of us carry different kinds of fear. Some we are aware of, while others reveal themselves when we face certain life situations. The moment fear grips us, we can lose our awareness, sense of self, and emotional stability. At that point, we often need support—a mentor, teacher, guide, or loved one—to help us break through the wall of fear and come back to ourselves.

But it’s not always easy. Deep-rooted fears are like ancient trees. Just like a storm struggles to uproot a tree with strong roots, it can be incredibly difficult to overcome fears that are deeply embedded in our psyche.

When fear is that intense, it can lead to panic attacks or anxiety episodes, where a person feels like they’re drowning. In those moments, a strong force of support is needed to pull them out.

Let me share one of my own deepest fears: fear of snakes.
I’ve had a deep fear of snakes for many years — a real phobia.

It started when I was a teenager. I used to dream of snakes almost every night. Sometimes they would chase me, sometimes just appear out of nowhere. I’d wake up sweating and scared. There was one night I was so terrified, I woke my grandma. She listened, calmed me down, and started chanting Hanuman Chalisa. Slowly, I was able to sleep again.

The next morning, she took me to a Shiv temple. We offered milk and bananas. Prayed. And for a while, the dreams stopped.

But then… they came back.
And this became a cycle — fear, prayer, relief… and then again fear.

Even now, I sometimes see snakes in my dreams — especially around the new year.
And though it’s not as frequent, the fear hasn’t completely gone.
I still can’t look at a picture of a snake without feeling uneasy. Seeing one in real life is worse — my body goes into alert mode.

But over the years, I’ve worked on it. I’ve sat with the fear, questioned it, tried to understand it. I’m still working on it. And that’s okay.

If you’re struggling with fear or anxiety, try journaling with these questions to connect deeper with your inner world:

  1. What am I scared of?
  2. Beyond fear, what emotions does this fear bring up?
  3. What would happen if my fear came true?
  4. Would I die if this fear came true? If yes, what does that mean for me?
  5. What purpose does this fear serve in my life?
  6. In what ways does this fear protect me?
  7. What’s stopping me from letting go of this fear?
  8. What is the worst-case scenario?
  9. What baby steps can I take to begin letting go?
  10. Is it even possible to let this fear go? How?
  11. What if I never overcome this fear?
  12. Can I live with this fear peacefully?
  13. Is this fear limiting my growth or happiness in life?

These questions are not meant to fix things overnight, but they offer a pathway to self-awareness and healing.

It’s completely okay to have fears.
I have more than one. And I’ve made peace with that.

The important thing is to be mindful — to know when a fear is starting to hold you back or stop your growth. If that’s the case, then maybe it’s time to gently begin the process of healing. No rush. No pressure. Just baby steps.

And if, after years of trying, you still hold on to a fear — don’t curse yourself.
We all have our own timeline.
What matters is that you tried.

Please… don’t turn it into a competition.
This isn’t about being fearless.
It’s about understanding that YOU ARE NOT YOUR FEAR.
